First thing is to have a good idea what the app is supposed to do.  If you don't know what it should do, how can you tell if it does not do it?  Next is to have some kind of "plan" or "map" to ensure that you do at least some testing in all areas and don't "over" test any area.  When testing or planning a test, insert "stupid" actions to ensure they are handled appropriately.  Be aware that different devices can behave differently and ensure that a good representative of devices is tried.  And finally, be objective.  Is it easy to use or difficult?  Intuitive or requires constant use of "help"?  Does it fully cover the function or need other apps?  Would you buy it/use it?
